BIOGRAPHY
A Fine Arts graduate from the University of Toronto, Jane Burns is a Toronto
painter/printmaker who has built a reputation for her work. Her work has been
shown in Toronto galleries for 20 years. The work is also shown in the U.S
and across Canada. It can be seen in the Art Rental department of the Albright
Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York, in the University of Toronto's permanent
art collection and in numerous other collections. (see resume) Jane also lectures
and teaches printmaking. She spends summers in her northern studio at Big
Bay with her dog Finegan.
..."Experimenting with various papers and printing techniques, Jane produced
a succession of powerful and highly sophisticated prints. As a print
maker myself, I could only stand back in admiration. With the printmaking
experience under the belt, the artist returned to oil and it is in this medium
that the full maturity and authority is manifest. I love the physicality
in the current work. I love the inherent struggle in these canvasses
as she does mighty battle with a two dimensional surface. She takes
no prisoners. If the attack is sometimes brutal, the brutality does
not preclude the poetry. There are areas of colour of such density they
almost suck the viewer into the depth without destroying the surface tension
and these are juxtaposed with passages whisper thin and lyrical in impact." ...
